About Paul Uhlig

A Two Day Workshop with Peter Block and Paul Uhlig

Paul Uhlig, MD, FACS, is a cardiothoracic surgeon internationally recognized for his research and practice regarding high reliability health care teamwork and patient/family centered care.

Paul’s professional interests focus on developing and understanding collaborative approaches for transforming health care practice culture to better meet the evolving needs of patients and society. The cardiac care team he led while on the faculty at Dartmouth Medical School received the Eisenberg Patient Safety Award, the highest award in patient safety given by The Joint Commission and National Quality Forum. This recognition was for developing the Concord Collaborative Care Model, an approach to interprofessional care with active involvement of patients and families now known as the Social Process Model of Collaborative Teamwork. Paul and W. Ellen Raboin, PhD, work as partners applying principles of social construction in health care. Both are associates of the Taos Institute. Paul has given invited addresses on health care teamwork, patient safety, and interprofessional practice at major academic health centers and health systems across the US and internationally, including the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh where he was awarded a King James IV professorship for contributions in patient safety. He has worked closely with Peter Block for five years. Paul’s pioneering work in health care is described in the latest edition of Peter’s bestselling book, Flawless Consulting.

Paul and his wife, Anna Nelson Uhlig, live in Wichita, Kansas, and have four sons.
