Embracing Freedom

Every company in the world has a list of its “core values,” and most of them sound exactly the same. Efficiency. Customer satisfaction. But what about freedom? Only one company, Mars Incorporated, actually lists freedom as one of its core values. Today our corporate culture is focused on pleasing top management and getting a good performance appraisal at the end of the year. Instead, we should be focused on supporting the people around us and helping them achieve their goals.

Corporate culture is not going to change on its own. In order for any change to occur, something new has to be brought to the conversation.  In this week’s video, Peter Block says something new needs to be freedom. When we have more choice in what we get to do, we are more productive and we are happier doing that work. It is a principle that, as Peter points out, has been proven over and over again.

So why isn’t freedom already a part of the conversation? Peter says institutions and associations are afraid of freedom. That is why freedom is considered a radical idea, and why we must take a stance in support of freedom.

For more information about Peter’s idea of freedom, check out our upcoming Community and Transformation: Beyond Reform in Health and Education, coming up on October 10-11, 2012 in Red Bank, New Jersey.
