We live in a world of patriarchy; top-down orders and executive command rule supreme but beneath this veil of discriminate power, we have the choice to change it.
A lot of this is up to us – we have to have the gumption to stand up to what author Peter Block describes in the following video from a public workshop in September 2011 as a world telling you to ‘shut down.’ He cites instances of superiors telling people they’re ‘too expressive’ or ‘unreasonable.’ Peter explains that most of us have been told we’re ‘too much’ when the real problem is likely that we’re looking at things from a different angle.
Peter uses the Roman god Mars as an example of a patriarchal figure. Mars, the god of war, doesn’t want to hear about peace – much like the patriarchal figures in our organizations prefer their own traditions to that of two-way communication and mutual understanding. If you’re interested in learning more about Peter’s work, we still have availability in our upcoming September 11-12 Flawless Consulting open-enrollment workshop.
